Edinburgh Maths Tutor

Highly Experienced Teacher – Online and Face-to-face Tuition

Tuition Options

I offer a range of flexible tuition options to suit your needs and budget, including 1-to-1 face-to-face tuition at my home, or online tuition individually or in groups. Sessions can last from 30 minutes to a couple of hours – the choice is yours. Once you’ve decided what you’re looking for, please get in touch and we can discuss how I can best meet your child’s needs.

Face-to-face Tuition

This works well for pupils of all ages who live locally, and is the best option for younger children.  I tutor from my home in Murrayfield, Edinburgh. Please note that there will be dogs (two small terriers) elsewhere in the house, who may bark when your child arrives. Parents are welcome to sit in on the session (and to join in and learn too!) if they wish.

Online Tuition

This may be the preferred option for older pupils since it can take place remotely and avoids travel time. We can connect by video or audio call, whichever you prefer, and work is shared in real time using an online whiteboard tool. If you live locally, I’m very happy to offer a combination of face-to-face and online sessions as required.

1-1 Tuition

1-1 tuition allows me to match the lessons exactly to the needs of your child.  It gives them as much thinking time on each question as they need, and we can look at concepts from as many different angles as necessary to ensure they fully understand them.  It’s obviously more expensive than group tuition, but if your budget is tight, half-hour sessions with focused practice between them can also be effective.

Group Tuition

Ideal for those on a tighter budget. sessions can be adapted to suit the needs of different groups of pupils, and lessons given to all of them together, using a digital platform which allows video, voice and text communication. Group tuition works best when children know each other, so the ideal is for a group of parents to arrange the sessions with me together. Alternatively, you can start with a shorter, 1-1 session, and I can pair up students at the same level as more enquire.

Holiday Revision Courses and Clubs

These can be arranged as and when required at different times of year. Holiday sessions allow for consolidation of key learning, and groups can work together to prepare for seasonal events such as the Scottish or U.K. Maths challenges. Online sessions have in the past proved very popular for older primary children, and I’d also be willing to consider running parent-and-child group sessions for younger children if we can find an appropriate venue.  Please enquire.

February and Easter Revision Courses

I am currently planning a five-day series of Nat 5 Revision workshops (online using Microsoft Teams), during the February holiday. These will run either from 9.00am to 10.00am, 9.30-10.30 or 10.00 to 11.00 depending on the preference of participants.  Topics also will be agreed nearer the time according to the requests of those who wish to attend. The fee is expected to be around £150 or £125 for the week, depending on the number of participants. If you think you might be interested in these, please enquire.
If the model is successful, I may offer a repeat Nat 5 series during the Easter Holiday and also a parallel course for Higher Students. Watch this space.

Please note that no tutor can guarantee a particular grade for a child, as success depends as much on the pupil’s aptitude and application as it does on the expertise of the tutor. Learning is very much a partnership between pupil, parent and teacher. Whichever option you choose, your child will get the most from their tuition by putting in work between sessions, both to revise what they’ve learned and to practise new skills. I will give them every support I can, to encourage them to do this!
